2024 was a year full of growth and green successes for NIKIN! In this blog, we take you on a journey through our tree planting projects, their successes and the positive impact we have created this year.
January: Reforestation in the Sierras Grandes, Argentina
In January, we supported reforestation in Argentina with One Tree Planted to revitalize areas that have been severely damaged by fires and intensive livestock farming.
- Trees planted: 26,914 Polylepis trees
- Project objective: Improving soil stability, promoting biodiversity and increasing the amount of water in rivers
- Further details: Protection and greening of stony and dry soils, establishment of five working groups: Land selection, livestock fencing, tree nursery, planting and monitoring, strengthening the local community through new jobs
February: Protecting the Polylepis forests in the Andes
In February, our focus was on the high-altitude forest ecosystems of the Andes. Together with One Tree Planted and Acción Andina, we planted native trees to preserve habitats and strengthen communities.

- Countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile, Peru
- Project objectives: Protection of indigenous Polylepis forests, creation of local jobs and capacity building, promotion of biodiversity and water supply
March: Reforestation in Canada and Kenya
In March, we supported projects in two countries to combat forest fires in Canada and coastal erosion in Kenya.
Canada:- Location: Cariboo and Alberta, British Columbia
- Trees planted: 10,500
- Goal: Restoration of burnt forest areas through natural regeneration and support for indigenous communities
- Location: LikoniRiver delta, Kwale
- Trees planted: 15,183 mangroves
- Objective: Stabilization of the coasts and improvement of income sources through sustainable fishing
April: Reforestation in the Rietenberg forestry operation, Switzerland
In April, we supported thesupported the Swiss forest with our Forest Collection. For every TreeShirt sold, we donated a tree to the Rietenberg forestry operation in order to to rebuild the forest in Aargau that was damaged by the bark beetle.

- Project goals: Restoration of an important ecosystem, protection of the livelihood of animals and plants
We are also particularly proud of our TreePlanting Day in Krauchtal, in the canton of Bern, where we planted around 300 trees together with QoQa and the community.
May: Mauna Kea Restoration, Hawaii
In May, we supported a long-term project aimed at restoring native forests in Hawaii and protecting them against forest fires.

- Project objectives: Protection of native flora and fauna, combating invasive species and forest fires
June: Agroforestry in Thailand
In June, we supported One Tree Planted, a project in northern Thailand that promotes biodiversity and food security through sustainable agriculture.

- Region: Mae Na Wong, Mae Yang Mint and surroundings
- Project objectives: Promoting agroforestry and sustainable nutrition, increasing biodiversity by 40%
July-September: Mangrove restoration in Guatemala
Over the summer, we supported a project to restore mangrove forests along the Pacific coast of Guatemala in order to combat coastal erosion and promote biodiversity.

- Region: Departments of San Marcos, Retalhuleu, Suchitepéquez
- Project goals: Restoration of water catchment areas, protection of habitats and local communities
July: Reforestation in Senegal
In July, we supported a project in Senegal that is restoring degraded forests and reducing the impact of intensive agriculture.
- Trees planted: 15,533
- Project goals: Protection of the Ndankou and Patte forests, promotion of biodiversity and sustainable use
October-November: Mangrove reforestation in Kenya
In autumn, we supported the restoration of mangrove forests in Kwale, Kenya, to stabilize the coastal region and improve the living conditions of local people.

- Project objectives: Protection of the coasts from erosion, creation of sustainable sources of income
December: Reforestation in Sete Lagoas, Brazil
The year ended with a special project in Brazil, which Carla, a member of the NIKIN management team, personally supervises. The project promotes reforestation in the Cerrado biome and the establishment of long-term nature conservation initiatives.

Total impact 2024
The tree planting projects supported had a variety of positive effects on nature and people. And each project has a different focus. But this sustainable impact is only possible thanks to you, our committed community. Together, this year we were able to 252'836 trees in 13 countries this year and thus make our contribution to restoring ecosystems and protecting our planet.
Since the start of NIKIN, we have planted a total of 2'465'808 trees planted. We have set ourselves an ambitious goal for 2025: the 3 million mark mark - with your support we can do it! Let's keep growing together and make our world greener one tree at a time.
