Sustainability doesn't have to be too expensive! - NIKIN EU

Sustainability doesn't have to be too expensive!

Sustainability has become a major need - regardless of the area of life. The big problem is that although people would like to live more sustainably, this is only financially viable for a few. But that doesn't have to be the case - we offer an alternative.

Sustainability has become a major need - regardless of the area of life. The big problem is that although people would like to live more sustainably, this is only financially viable for a few. But that doesn't have to be the case - we offer an alternative.

Sustainability

One of the first definitions of sustainability can be found in Carl Carlowitz's work "Sylvicultura oeconomica", which deals with forestry. According to this, only as much should be cut down in a forest as can regenerate naturally within a certain period of time. Great importance has therefore always been attached to treating our environment with respect. However, the fact that global deforestation points to a somewhat different interpretation of this former definition is left out of this article. So let's stick to sustainability! This can be implemented in a variety of ways in everyday life. On the one hand, you can do without PET bottles and choose a stainless steel bottle as an alternative. Or you can start with your diet and, in line with the motto "regional instead of global", pay attention to seasonal and regional products that do not have a long (or any) transportation route behind them. Given that we can even do our shopping online, we should be all the more aware of how sustainable individual shopping actually is. With a quick click, we are usually not aware that our purchase decision has an impact on the production, transportation and trade of goods.

So instead of hunting for the cheapest possible food or discounted clothing, sustainability should be a priority here too. Fortunately, sustainability is no longer a foreign concept for many clothing brands. We can already find a few examples in Switzerland that show that sustainable shopping is definitely possible and recommendable. However, there is one tiny problem with sustainably produced clothes: the price! As younger people in particular are very familiar with online shopping and are interested in NIKIN, we are also targeting them. In our opinion, everyone can be sustainable without having to spend a lot of money.

With our concept, we want to give everyone the chance to do something good for a low cost. Nevertheless, we at NIKIN are aware that we are not yet as sustainable as we would like to be. But to be able to offer products that are 100% sustainable, we need capital and, above all, time! NIKIN was only launched two and a half years ago - with just CHF 5000 as a starting budget. Since then, we have been doing everything we can to move in an ecological direction and are constantly on the lookout for new and more sustainable materials for our products, such as the "reTreeanie" made from recycled jeans.

As already mentioned, there are other brands besides NIKIN that offer sustainable clothing. We think that's great! But what about the price? Of course, the price is higher for these brands than it is for us, as they are already a step ahead of our goal of offering sustainable products (which sometimes brings us criticism). The only disadvantage with these brands is that not everyone can afford their products. So what's the point of sustainability if not everyone can join in?

We at NIKIN therefore focus on sensible sustainability. Although our products are not (yet) 100% sustainable, they are affordable enough that everyone can do their bit and at least meet Carlowitz's definition to some extent by planting a tree with a small contribution.
