naNea - The Swiss material innovation for true circularity

Sustainability in fashion goes far beyond the use of organic cotton. With the introduction of naNea, a biodegradable polyester developed by OceanSafe, NIKIN is focusing on an innovative solution that consistently implements the circular concept in the textile industry. This pioneering material offers the opportunity to make fashion more sustainable and circular.

What is naNea?

naNea is an innovative synthetic material developed by OceanSafe, a Swiss company based in Bern. It is a Fully biodegradable polyesterwhich was specially developed for the circular economy. Unlike conventional polyester, which often releases harmful and persistent microplastic particles, naNea is non-toxic and does not contribute to marine pollution. It has been designed so that it can be recycled again and again without compromising quality.

OceanSafe's naNea material has been specially developed for the circular economy.

The special thing about naNea is its Complete recyclability. Products made from this material can be returned to the production cycle at the end of their useful life to make new textiles. So the Material in a closed circuit and reduces dependence on new raw materials. The manufacturing process is also remarkable: naNea is produced using renewable energy and does not release any harmful chemicals.

The circular products made from naNea can be recycled again and again - without any loss of quality.

naNea and the circular economy

The circular economy is becoming increasingly important in the fashion industry in order to reduce the enormous amount of textile waste. Around 100 billion items of clothing are produced worldwide every year, a large proportion of which ends up in landfill or is incinerated. This is where NIKIN relies on naNea: products made from this innovative material can be recycled and reused so that they remain in the cycle. However, if a naNea product is ever disposed of, it decomposes completely in the biological cycle. What is particularly impressive is that naNea degrades in seawater to over 93% within just 99 days (according to ASTM D6691), without leaving behind any harmful persistent microparticles or residues. So that naNea offers a real solution for a more environmentally friendly fashion future.

Our circular products make nature the main beneficiary.

Why is naNea important for the fashion industry?

The use of naNea is an important step towards making the fashion industry more sustainable. Fast fashion brands produce clothing that is often only worn for a short time and quickly ends up in the bin. Materials like naNea prove that there is another way. With the ability to be recycled over and over again, naNea offers a real alternative to conventional fabrics that have a high environmental impact. It is also one of the few synthetic materials that can be Fully Cradle to Cradle Certified® Gold which confirms its environmental friendliness and recyclability.

A material with a future

NIKIN is proud to have found a material for true circularity in OceanSafe's naNea. The new circular products, such as the TreeShirt and the TreeHoodie, are examples of the possibilities offered by this fabric. With naNea, clothing remains circular. Combined with our new "Circular Cashback" programwhich allows worn-out products to be returned, creates a closed loop that makes nature the main beneficiary. All information about our new "Circular Cashback" program you can find here.
