Return to Thailand: Our second support for the Hilltribes project

In February 2025 closes NIKIN is once again following on from a special tree planting project in Thailand that was supported back in June 2024. Together with our partner organization, we are committed to reforestation and agroforestry in the northern regions of Thailand. This project not only contributes to reforestation, but also to strengthening local communities and biodiversity.

A sustainable commitment to Thailand's forests

The project, which is part of our long-term collaboration with Hilltribe-communities, is taking place in six catchment areas in northern Thailand: Mae Na Wong, Nam KohkMae Ta Chang, Mae Yang Mint and two new areas, Mae Chaem 1 and Mae Chaem 2 This region, close to the city of Chiang Rai and the border with Myanmar, is historically characterized by violence and exploitation of ethnic minorities.

The project works closely with 448 households, including 35 community forests, and plans to double the number of partner households to 1,100 families by the end of 2025. In total, around 1.3 million trees are to be planted and 188,900 hectares of land restored during this time. Thanks to the support of NIKIN and our community, this time 9'367 trees planted. We are committed to ecological, economic and social goals in order to strengthen the region in the long term. You want to wi ßwhere else do we plant trees? More than just planting trees: The goals of the project

The tree planting project in Thailand goes far beyond reforestation. Here are some of the key objectives and areas of impact:
  • Promotion of biodiversity and habitats

Planting trees such as mango, avocado or coffee strengthens biodiversity, revitalizes soils, improves the water supply and stabilizes the climate.

  • Protection of water catchment areas and soils

Measures such as small dams and water reservoirs prevent erosion and ensure access to clean water - especially in the dry season.

  • Strengthening communities

Through training in agroforestry and soil conservation, families achieve higher crop yields, improve their livelihoods and can invest in education and local projects.

  • Support for women and disadvantaged groups

58% of participants are women, often in leadership roles. The project promotes their social status and gives more girls access to education.

Why Thailand? Why this project?

Thailand is known for its breathtaking nature, but many regions are struggling with the consequences of deforestation and environmental degradation. Ethnic minorities, who often have limited access to land and resources, are particularly affected. The project combines ecological regeneration with social change and focuses specifically on working with these communities to secure their livelihoods in the long term.

Through training courses such as the "Farmer Field Schools" participants learn how to plant trees, maintain tree nurseries and implement new cultivation techniques. At the same time, an awareness of environmental protection is created that is sustainable in the long term.

Working together for a sustainable future

With our support in February 2025, we are helping to drive this important project forward. Thanks to the planting of 9,367 trees we are making a further contribution to a greener and fairer world. Our commitment to the environment goes beyond planting trees. We believe in the power of community and that together we can make the world a better place. Would you like to get involved too? For every NIKIN product you buy, we plant a tree. Together we make the world greener - #treebytree!
