Back to the Roots: How Diego Walder is Rethinking Spatz

Spatz is more than just a brand. For many, it’s a feeling—shaped by memories of campingcamps, long summer evenings outdoors, and tents that have accompanied generations. This connection is deeply rooted at NIKIN as well. As the founders of NIKIN, Nicholas and Robin were also shaped by exactly that: at Scout camp, around the campfire, in nature. That makes for us to collaborate with a brand that has helped shape Swiss outdoor culture for decades. Today, Spatz stands at a new turning point in its history. And right in the middle of it all: Diego Walder.

The Path to Spatz

His connection withSpatz did not begin as an outsider, but directly within the company. “I am joined Spatz because I spent out and about,” Diego explains. But his time there was marked by changes. The company ran into trouble, and production was eventually moved abroad. For him, , that a turning point.

“That’s when I decided to start my own business, because I believe it’s possible to manufacture tents in Switzerland.” With this conviction, he founded Zelthangar—and pursued a clear vision: high-quality tents, produced in Switzerland, combined with exceptional service for those who spend time outdoors. “Switzerland needs a service. Youth groups need a point of contact."

Two years in a tent

The path to getting there was anything but ordinary. To focus entirely on building his company, Diego lived in a tent for two years. It’s an experience that continues to shape him to this day. “The pressure was extreme high , and at the same time, that’s exactly what I wanted. Tdespite all the challenges he looks positively on this time : “There was no other way, but it was also awesome, to be honest. I mean, I thought it was really cool; I’d still do it today!”

This period not only helped him clearly define his goals and achieve them, but also to sharpen his focus on what really matters. “You’re back at the very bottom of Maslow’s hierarchy, but you also realize what’s truly important and can focus your energy and money intensely.” At the same time, it also meant he could test his products under real-world conditions: “I tested the tent myself that I sell.”

Spatz is flying back to Switzerland

Spatz never let him go during all those years. With Zelthangar, the opportunity finally arose to bring the brand back. “We were now also able to buy back Spatz and manufacture it in Switzerland again.” A step that holds significance not only economically but also emotionally—back to the roots, back to what has always defined Spatz.

This same philosophy is also evident in our collaboration with NIKIN. Both of us share a commitment to quality, durability, and a genuine connection to nature. “Like us, NIKIN is dedicated to delivering quality and sustainability. They also have a strong connection to youth groups,” says Diego. And he adds with a wink: “Nicholas and Robin are just ‘awesome dudes,’ just like we are, so it’s a perfect fit.”

DPass on the story

This shared vision has given rise to products that blend functionality and history. The Spatz Biwak Poncho is more than just a poncho—it can be converted into a one-person tent and is therefore made for true outdoor moments. Well-designed, versatile, andfunctional, this limited-edition product is made for true adventurers.

TheSpatz Toiletry Bag is designed for use in a tent. MMade from scraps of tent fabric left over from production, each piece is one of a kind. Limited edition, produced in Switzerland, and made for the outdoors—inspired by the very materials that have defined Spatz for decades.

In this way, our collaboration with NIKIN becomes not just a joint project, but a shared commitment to values, memories, and the vision of shaping the future of outdoor experiences for the next generation. The story of Spatz is far from over. It continues to be written—by people like Diego, who are willing to break new ground without forgetting their roots.
